This splendid detail of the monument to Sir Charles Montagu in
the chancel, is a wonderfully carved depiction of him in his tent in an army
encampment, with his musketeers by his side.
The inscription below the monument reads:
Heere lieth the Body of Y Worthy Knight
S. Charles Montagu; who died at his House
at Cranbrook in Essex in the parish of
Barking the 11 of September in Y yeere of
our Lorde Gpd 1625, being of Y
age of 61 yeares, who gave to
Y poore of Barking
forty pounds
