St Mary the Virgin, Stebbing Church -

This stone screen, at Stebbing, is extremely special. It has
three stepped lancet arches, which then themselves, reproduce into ogee arches,
like some representation of the Mandelbrot set. Within the screen are
quatrefoils and ballflowers, which therefore date the screen to not later than
c.1350, though Pevsner says it could well be a little earlier.
This type of stone screen exists in just one other church in
Essex (Great Bardfield), and in just one other church in the world besides (Trondheim
in Norway).
