Back to St Michael's Church, Pitsea

Image Description

The shape of the roof can still be seen on the east side of the tower. The loss of the main church structure is not as catastrophic as the loss of the tower would have been. The small church was rebuilt in 1871, by Sir Arthur Blomfield. For more pictures of this church, including some when the church was still intact, and one of the church slowly becoming rubble, visit the St Michael's, Pitsea pages on the excellent Basildon History Online website. There is also an interesting recount of some archaeological excavations on this site, courtesy of The Rochford Hundred Field Archaeology Group (link not working at time of migration from my old site).
