St Mary & All Saints, Great Stambridge Church – Exterior 1: There is evidence of a Saxon church here at Great Stambridge, though that evidence is scant. St Mary & All Saints, Great Stambridge Church – Exterior 2: In the N wall of both the chancel and nave are indications of blocked round headed windows. The wall itself is too thin to be Norman work. St Mary & All Saints, Great Stambridge Church – Exterior 3: According to ecclesiological historian John Vigar, these strange round shapes are sections of either a pillar, or a pillar piscina. They have been used as rubble during the construction (or repair) of the N chancel wall. St Mary & All Saints, Great Stambridge Church – Exterior 4: The N nave wall, which also bears evidence of Saxon origins. St Mary & All Saints, Great Stambridge Church – Exterior 5: Clearly visible here, is one of the very narrow, blocked windows.
