St Nicholas, Great Wakering Church – Exterior 1: The nave of the church is Early Norman. This is demonstrated by the blocked N window. Just visible is one of the Early Norman flat broad pilaster buttresses at the base of the tower, although the upper parts of the tower are later Norman, a fact borne out by the blocked Norman W window visible from inside the nave. The upper broach spire is C15 or later. This is an Early Saxon motif, and one wonders what can have been the reason for introducing it here? Older foundations, or simply some obstacle in the way of a two-storeyed S porch?" St Nicholas, Great Wakering Church – Monument 1: Sacred to the memory of John Roberts Esquire, who departed this life on the 24th day of April 1820, in the 52nd year of his age. St Nicholas, Great Wakering Church – Monument 2: In the adjoining churchyard rests all that is mortal of Elizabeth Peart, widow of William Peart, Esqre, of Settle in Yorkshire, and daughter of the late John Lodwick, Esqre, of North Shoebury in this county. === She died at Ealing, Middlesex, on the 7th February 1832, in the 65th year of her age. === The Revd William Peart, her only child, to whom she devoted a life of the tenderest and most self-denying affection, has erected this memorial to a mother whom he has never ceased to love and to mourn.
